Welcome to the Observatory of Nuclear Fuel Supplies, a tool developed within the
GeoNuFE project, funded by the
European Research Council. It maps the facilities, trade flows and national shares of the global nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining to power plants.
Start with the map. Click any facility to see who owns it, its status, its capacity and our notes. Within each step of the fuel cycle, the size of a symbol follows capacity, so a large circle or square is a large plant.
The Quick view row is the fastest way in: one click sets the map up for a step of the chain (uranium resources, mining, conversion, enrichment, fuel fabrication or power plants). Click the chip again, or the cross next to the chips, to go back to the full map.
Customize lets you build your own view. By default only operating facilities are shown; Status adds suspended, under construction and planned ones. Flows draws the trade in uranium products between countries, and Country shares shades countries by their weight in a step of the cycle, computed from the operating facilities shown on the map.
Flows run from the exporting to the importing country, and thicker lines mean larger volumes. Once flows are on, the year slider (all years by default) and the From/To menu let you narrow down to a period or to a route.
Country and Owner filters zoom the map in and open a summary in the statistics panel. Choosing an owner lists all of its facilities, whatever their status, with the share it holds in each.
The Statistics panel (tab on the right edge) follows whatever you have on the map. Capacities count operating facilities only. You can drag its edge to make it wider.
Drag to move the map, scroll or use +/− to zoom, FIT to start over, and Aa to show or hide country names. The legend at the bottom left explains the symbols currently on the map.
About the data. The database is a work in progress and gets updated regularly; the date of the last update is at the bottom right of the map.
